Your emotions matter — and your next move matters too

Sitting with Feelings — Then Turning to Action

One of the most powerful skills in self-care is learning to sit with our feelings. Noticing fear, sadness, or overwhelm without rushing to fix, ignore, or judge them can be grounding. It’s a way of saying: “I see you. You matter. Your experience is real.”

When Awareness Needs a Companion

Feelings alone are essential, but sometimes emotional awareness needs action. This isn’t about suppressing or escaping what you feel — it’s about responding with intentional, compassionate steps.

Imagine living with a health condition that can suddenly feel alarming. The body sends a clear signal: you’re on high alert. Sitting with that fear helps you acknowledge it and prevent panic. Taking action — checking your blood pressure, keeping medication at hand, reviewing your safety plan — channels that awareness into something protective. It validates the emotion and honours your agency.

The Power of Combining Feeling and Doing

When you notice your feelings and then respond thoughtfully, you create a loop of self-care that is both grounding and empowering. You are tuning in to what matters and taking steps to care for yourself. This isn’t about perfection or control; it’s about blending presence with pragmatism.

Self-Care in Motion

In counselling, we often emphasise feeling safe with emotions. Pairing that with deliberate action reminds us that self-care is active as well as reflective. Sitting with feelings, then putting care into action, is a skill that protects, empowers, and honours the whole person — body, mind, and heart.
